We've been having long discussions at our last rehearsals, because of a tricky question that comes up all the time when we talk to others about our music : What kind of music do you play ?
To be honest, if I could avoid answering that question completetly I definetly would. But in this case avoiding it even slightly goes against our own interests. Even giving an unclear answer does not play in our favor.
Try telling someone you play an original kind of rock with a groove and many influences ranging from commercial pop music to jazz and 80's fusion. Most people have stopped listening about half way through that sentence. Those who bared with you might be curious - if your lucky.
It would be much easier to say "We play reggae" or "We play soul/funk", then people would know straight away if they are interested in your band or not.
And the question we're up against is this. Should we set ourselves on a musical genre (or combination of genres) and stick to it (for a given time in any case) ?
So far we've just been making songs in all different genres and playing them. Therefore we are kind of stylistically all over the place, which some people find to be interesting and others find annoying.
I think that someone booking opening bands for a big venue is going to want know (if not need to know) what audience your band will appeal to in order to decide whether or not you are the band he wants. And in that respect I think we need to consciously target an audience by making decisions about what genre(s) we play.
I would love to hear your feedback on this, leave a comment and let us know what you think !
